Beit El - Jacob

Beit El, identified with the archaeological site of Beitin in the hills of Samaria, holds a profound connection to our forefather, Jacob. In Genesis 28:10-22, as Jacob fled from his brother Esau, he stopped for the night at a place where he rested his head on a stone.

In a dream, he saw a ladder stretching to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it. At the top, God reaffirmed the covenant He had made with Abraham and Isaac, promising Jacob the land of Canaan and countless descendants. Upon awakening, Jacob declared, “Surely the Lord is in this place!” Naming it Beit El (House of God), he set up the stone as a pillar and vowed to dedicate the site to God.

Archaeological excavations at Beitin, widely identified as ancient Beit El, have uncovered remains of a settlement from various periods, including altars, pottery, and structures. These findings reflect its importance as a place of worship and its role in early Jewish history. Visiting Beit El today offers an opportunity to connect with Jacob’s transformative encounter and the spiritual legacy of this sacred site.
